Animatronic Tiger for Zoo Decoration

A zoo with live tigers has an odd problem with an animatronic one: placed badly, the model makes the real animals look like part of a diorama. That is not a reason to skip the build. It is a reason to put it where visitors are being told something rather than shown an animal — the entrance, the queue, the photo point outside the tiger house. Why a two-metre tiger sits low

At 0.6 m high this build reads closer to a crouch or a lying animal than a standing one, and that is deliberate. A low build puts the head at a child's eye level, photographs well from above, and sits in a planting bed without a plinth or a foundation.

The trade is that it does not read as a standing tiger at any distance. It reads as a tiger in the grass, which is the right read for decoration and the wrong one for an exhibit. Buyers who want a walk-around animal are looking at a different build.

Where it goes, in a zoo that already has tigers

Three placements work: the approach path to the tiger house, where the model does duty as signage and photo bait; a planted bed inside the entrance, seen at close range; and a children's area or education court where touching is allowed.

The placement to avoid is an empty enclosure or a paddock where visitors expect a live animal. That is the read that turns decoration into disappointment, and signage does not repair it once the expectation is set. Keep the animal where the surroundings already say model: a path edge, a queue line, a photo frame.

A short set, and the one turn worth tuning

Head turn and neck, jaw with sound, blink, tail, and a body lift as if breathing. The set is short, which suits a decoration: nobody stands at a queue line for two minutes watching a tiger.

Worth tuning is the head turn toward the queue, with a pause at the end of travel. A tiger that follows people as they shuffle forward is the thing that gets photographed, and the movement is slow; the same travel at double speed reads as a fairground ride.

Stripes at one metre

Q235 steel frame, rust-proof treated, foam carved, 5–7 mm silicone, colour sprayed in translucent layers. The stripes are the giveaway at close range: they follow the body's contour, and a build that paints them flat shows it at a metre.

Most viewing of this animal happens at a metre, because it sits low in a bed beside a path. Rated −25 °C to 45 °C, 110 V or 220 V configured for the destination, with core electronics on a two-year warranty. A tiger in a planting bed takes weather from one side, and the sunward flank is the one to look at during commissioning.

Trolley, pad and trigger choice

One crate, base frame, control cabinet, sound module. At 2 m by 0.6 m it moves on a trolley with two people and sits on a paved pad, a deck, or a ballasted plate in a bed. No lift is involved, which is why this size suits sites that install between events.

Triggering follows the placement: proximity for a queue line, a floor mat for a photo point, a timed loop for a bed nobody walks through. Parameters are set at commissioning and handed over as a written record. The base plate is the part that decides whether the animal stays level through a wet winter, and a bed that drains badly shows up as a tilt by spring rather than as a fault in the animal.

When a decoration is the wrong buy

Send a photo of the intended spot and the path beside it, plus the height of any fence or planting, and whether the animal stands under trees — light under a canopy is green and shifting, and the tone is set for it.

Where this build fits badly: a paddock, an enclosure, or anywhere visitors arrive expecting a living animal. It is a decoration, and it works when the site treats it as one.
